At the Philadelphia Obituary Project, we treat homicide victims as individuals rather than statistics. But we are in crisis. The number of people murdered continues to rise, even during the pandemic. And so every month, we will share this data along with the names of each person in one post.
After one of the most violent years in decades, 2021 is appearing to continue with this trend.
Police recorded 50 murders in Philadelphia during the first month of the year, which is a 32% increase over January 2020, which had 38.
Last year ended with 499 murders, with the total resetting 30 minutes after midnight on Jan. 1 when 37-year-old Rudolph Ebinger was fatally shot in the 100 block of Ritner Street in South Philadelphia.
Here are the names of all the people killed in January, plus when and where. But we know they are not just names. Please contact us at [email protected] if you are a family member of any of these victims so we can properly memorialize them.
