At the Philadelphia Obituary Project, we treat homicide victims as individuals rather than statistics. But we are in crisis. The number of people murdered continues to rise, even during the pandemic. And so every month, we will share this data along with the names of each person in one post.
In May, 46 people were murdered in Philadelphia, including five in one day, May 10. This is a decrease compared to April, in which 53 people were murdered.
As of June 14, there have been a total of 247 homicides so far in 2021, an increase of 36% over last year. During this week in 2020, the total had reached 182.
