No matter how long it’s been since a person has been murdered, the pain still rings true years, even decades, later.
That’s the case for John Culberson’s family, who was killed in Philadelphia in 1990. He was Yolanda Bell’s step-father, and she contacted the Philly Obit Project because even though she lost him 34 years ago, it still hurts. She didn’t have all the details of his life, or even any surviving photos, but she felt he still deserved to be remembered. We agreed.
John was born in Atlanta, Georgia but moved to Philadelphia 1978. This was a man who simply wanted to find his place in this big city.
Yolanda said he was a dedicated man no matter what he did. After he graduated from school, he enlisted and served in the United States Army and was incredibly proud of that service. Later, John secured a job as a parking attendant at one of the garages in Center City.
John spent more than 10 years with Yolanda’s mother and was a very strong father figure.
Even though he did not have any children of his own, he enjoyed spending time with his step-children (3 girls and 2 boys). Taking them on trips, bowling, roller skating and going to the movies were some of his special things to do with these young people.
His favorite movie was “Blacula,” the infamous 1972 vampire film, and he absolutely loved to dance. He always made family laugh when he imitated James Brown’s dance moves.
“My step-father was there for me when my biological father was not around,” Yolanda said. “I could count on him. He was a ‘very visible dad’.” He was supportive, encouraging, and very proud of his step-children.”
As so many victims today, John didn’t get the chance to see all of the children grown up.
He lost his life when he was shot during a robbery near the corner of Ridge Avenue and Master Street in North Philly.
“The pain is deeper since my own father was not in the picture,” Yolanda said.
His body was sent back to Atlanta Georgia for funeral services and burial. He is survived by his 2 brothers and 1 sister, his step-children and a host of family and friends. His parents preceded him in death.
