At the Philadelphia Obituary Project, we treat homicide victims as individuals rather than statistics. But we are in crisis. The number of people murdered continues to rise, even during the pandemic. And so every month, we will share this data along with the names of each person in one post.
As of Sept. 9, there have been 314 people murdered in the City of Philadelphia. This is a 31% increase compared to this date last year, when 239 people were killed by Sept. 9.

So far, 2020 is outpacing 2007 as the deadliest year in decades in Philadelphia. During August 2020, there were 52 homicides, the highest monthly total of 2020 so far.
Not only is Philadelphia contending with a global pandemic, we’re losing more and more members of our community to senseless violence. More mothers are crying. More children have been left parentless.
