At the Philadelphia Obituary Project, we treat homicide victims as individuals rather than statistics. But we are in crisis. The number of people murdered continues to rise, even during the pandemic. And so every month, we will share this data along with the names of each person in one post.
As of Aug. 4, there have been 257 people murdered in the City of Philadelphia. This is a 34% increase compared to this date last year, when 192 people were killed by Aug. 4.

So far, 2020 is outpacing 2007 as the deadliest year on record in Philadelphia.
During July 2020, there were 48 homicides, a staggering increase from July 2019, when 25 people were killed.

Not only is Philadelphia contending with a global pandemic, we’re losing more and more members of our community to senseless violence. More mothers are crying. More children have been left parentless.
